Orphaned as a child, Annie's special friendship with Alec is a source of strength and security which sees them both through many difficulties in their nineteenth-century Scotland.

This MacDonald story has a LOT of the Scots dialect, which I've become accustomed to now, but if I had read it earlier, it would have discouraged me. The Kindle version, however, has a glossary at the end with Scots words defined! So helpful! I will read Sir Gibbie again and use that glossary. Alec and Annie, the two main characters are very likable and very real (but, then, all MacDonald's characters are very real). As always, there are a few villains you will love to hate even though MacDonald keeps reminding you that as a Christian you shouldn't hate them but instead feel sorry for them. And Cosmo Cupples's relationship with Alec is oftentimes hilarious and in the end one of the most touching and satisfying things I have ever read. Some of Alec's adventures in his younger days dragged for me, but once he grew older, he was always interesting. Through Annie Anderson, MacDonald shows the tender love of God as well as he ever has. She brought tears to my eyes by making me see, through her words, how loving God is. My favorite MacDonald books are Donal Grant and Sir Gibbie, but this one is high up.Product details

Alec Forbes Of Howglen edition by George Macdonald Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Hard accent to understand. The book is definitely a product of its time and place. Wished I was more equipped to enjoy it
George MacDonald's Alec Forbes of Howglen is one of his best.
I Love the Story of Alec and Annie!
I love his books. Beautifully written, even though some of his plots or characters repeat in other stories, but there are always nuggets of profound wisdom that make me come back for more.
Hard to beat David Elginbrod, but this is a beautiful story. The Scotch novels are his best, I think. Highly recommend!
I have found that in the books that I have read, George MacDonald always has one character that portrays Christ. Annie Anderson is that character in this book. Those who seek the face of God will see Him in this young maiden. She bears no one ill-will and has a faith that her heavenly Father loves her and takes care of her the same as her earthly father would if he were still alive.
Any novel I've ever undertaken to read authored by George MacDonald has been a pleasure enjoyed in a way other books cannot attain. The depth of the relationships among characters and their quest to find God and His purposes are so much to learn from and live by and model oneself after. I must say Alec Forbes is no exception. Many of the characters develop in such a way, over the course of the book, that points the reader in hopeful directions and faithful thoughts. Plots are not the source of treasure, though the pages are continually turning.
