For the last three years I have been building my own prop helmets as part of a desire to go to comic conventions as a cosplayer. But I'm hamfisted, impatient and my budget is non-existent. Because of these conditions, my results have been less impressive than I'd hoped, but showing them to other people has helped them see that you can learn a lot by trying, and sometimes good enough is a decent step on the path to perfect. Also, it's funny.

Trasler gives some top notch insights into what not to do when building your own cosplay outfit. The focus is mainly on helmets (because it sounds like that’s the hardest part), and he takes the reader through the steps he took along the way. Parts are painful, others hilarious. His self-deprecating sense of humour had me laughing out loud on the bus a few times, something I dislike doing because I don’t like it when people look at me like I’m a weirdo on the bus. True or not.
Anyway, as someone who has recently had my own cosplay disaster, I took heart that I’m not the only one fumbling around in the dark, and I have hope that I, too, will learn from my mistakes and get better along the way!
Great overview of Damian's start as a cosplay builder. Wish it was longer and a little more detailed, but absolutely worth reading. I got a few ideas (of what not to do) from this book.
Both encouraging and scary! All hobbyists will resonate with these tales. And spouses. I can't wait for the promised updates...
